Nervous system By:Paisley
Nerves are the receivers of sensory information. They are made up of neurons. The central nervous system's function is to maintain homeostasis. The central nervous system consists of the brain and spinal cord. The brain is made up of cerebrum, cerebellum, brain stem, pituitary and hypothalamus. The cerebrum makes up 85% of the brains weight and controls all of your voluntary muscles. The cerebellum is in the back of the brain and it keeps your balance. The brain stem keeps you breathing and performs all of the necessary functions for life and controls all of your involuntary muscles. The pituitary gland is the size of a pea, controls growth and releases hormones. The hypotalamus controls temperature. The spinal cord is a long bundle of nerves in your spinal column. The peripheral nervous system consists of ears, taste organs and scent organs, basically all of the nerves outside of the brain and spinal cord. Eyes send visuals to your brain to be interpreted into an understandable concept. Ears send audible noises through the ear drum where the sound vibrates around and is sent to the brain. Taste organs are receptors that send messages to your brain about what the item tastes like, and what object tastes like that. Scent receptors send all of the information about the scent to the brain so it can be paired with the same smelling object. Strokes, headaches, dizziness, and polio are some nervous system disorders.
Interesting facts:
There are more cells in the brain, than there are stars in the milky way. There are 1,000,000,000 (one billion) neurons in the brain alone. It works with the skeletal system because the bones protect the nerves, the muscular because the nerves send messages to the muscles telling them when to move, endocrine because the brain controls the endocrine glands. The brain controls the respiratory rate in the respiratory system. The brain controls the drinking and feeding behavior in the digestive system. The skin in the integumentary system sends messages to the nerves. If all so the neurons in your body were spread out, it would stretch about 600 miles long.
